What sport taught me about consistency

Handball and shot-put sharpened the same habit useful in engineering: repeat the fundamentals, measure honestly, and adjust without drama.

Two different sports, one lesson

Handball rewards quick decisions under pressure. Shot-put rewards repeatable technique and patient accumulation. Both punish inconsistency more than they reward occasional brilliance.

Parallels with research work

  • Fundamentals first: Data cleaning, baselines, and evaluation splits are the warm-up nobody skips.
  • Honest measurement: A personal best only matters with proper conditions—same idea as held-out geographic splits.
  • Adjust without ego: Bad training days and failed experiments are information, not identity.

What I still practice

Show up on schedule, log the session, review what worked, and change one variable at a time. That rhythm transferred directly from sport to long ML projects.
